![]() ![]() And Don't Look Back was initially just an exercise in a minimalist graphical style before I ended up fusing it with a lot of other loose ideas. Judith, for example, just started from me and Stephen wanting to mess around with some fucked up raycasting renderings. Terry Cavanagh: Pretty much all my games are concept driven I'm inspired by some core idea, so I start working on it and see how it develops. VVVVVV's character leans emotionally joyous and towards pure ludic craft. ![]() RPS: Your last two free indie games - Don't Look Back and Judith - have leaned towards the art game side of things, full of negatively charged emotions. Dizzy was a really big influence too - the facial expressions and individually named rooms and single colour sprites in VVVVVV all come right out of that. It's probably just easier to say that I'm influenced by Jet Set Willy, because it's the connection that everybody makes, but I had a C64, not a speccy! It's more accurate to say that I'm influenced by the games that were influenced by Jet Set Willy, like Monty on the Run and Jack the Nipper 2 and Mystery of the Nile and all the weird budget games I had when I was a kid. I wanted to create a game that explored a very simple set of mechanics to its limits. My goal with the game was to explore its level design possibilities as much as I could, without falling back on any elements that I felt would detract from its focus. In VVVVVV you can flip gravity, but you can't jump at all. Terry Cavanagh: VVVVVV is basically an exploration of a single gameplay mechanic. What's the inspirations? What were you trying to do? I never really thought I was going to be able to do this full time - I just assumed that eventually I'd run out of money and that'd be that. Otherwise I was probably just going to find myself working to pay off my debts, saving up and eventually going indie again when I'm 30 or something. I figured I could worry about paying back everything when I got a job, and for the moment I was better off seeing where this game development thing was going to lead me. ![]() I try not to think about my debts, mostly - I don't open bank statements or keep track of money going out. If it wasn't for the Don't Look Back sponsorship money from Kongregate, I would have had to quit way back then. I've been doing this full time for over two years now, but I ran out of money nearly a year ago. Terry Cavanagh: Because I found myself months into a big project and it was the only thing that made sense if I had any hope of continuing to make games into the new year. RPS: Hurrah! Why was now the time to make a commercial Indie game? It's a very exciting time to be a game designer! Games have been around all my life, and I've seen them grow and change, and I love that there's so much to explore, still. I'm not sure if I can even explain why, really - I love making games, I love playing games, I love that games can surprise me and reach me in ways that other mediums don't. I've still never made an RPG.Ībsolutely, I'm still fascinated with games. Not long after that I started making proper games of my own - I taught myself QBasic, made a load of silly minigames, but mostly worked on one big failed RPG project after another. I'm not sure if I'd even played an RPG before that it was completely alien to me. On a moment to moment basis I just loved everything that game did, everything about how it was constructed. I think I was maybe 13 or 14 when it came out, and I'd never played anything like it. ![]() The game that really made me want to be a game designer, that made me fall in love with games, was Final Fantasy VII. Terry Cavanagh: I started out programming on the C64 when I was a kid, but at that point it was really more of a technical thing - I enjoyed programming, but I didn't really care about making games, exactly. RPS: Okay - how did you fall in love with games? Are you still in love why games? WHY GAMES? Discover below why the Jet Set Willy comparisons aren't quite right, the thinking behind the pricing decision and lots more. After writing a Wot I Think, I decided it was time to talk to Mr Distractionware - Terry Cavanagh - about all things VVVVVV. It's a dream of the past, retro as an idea rather than simple recapitulation. Small, perfectly formed and highly punishing, it reminds me of some of my favourite games - and girlfriends, for that matter - of years gone by. VVVVVV has been my favourite game of the year so far. ![]() ![]() ![]() Now put Ridley back in that part where she belongs, because she is perfect. Bold, quick-thinking, a little cheeky, and not so interested in romance? All checks. Could male Rey still be an orphan and a scavenger? Check. Jordan, and consider how the role might change. Replace her in your imagination with the male actor of your choice, be it a Gosling or a Reynolds or a B. Just imagine if Daisy Ridley hadn't been cast as Rey in The Force Awakens. In fact, it's The Force Awakens' complete disregard of gender roles in Rey's case that heightens her impact. But the triumph of Rey has nothing to do with gender. Rey is noteworthy as a female character who catalyzes action instead of existing to serve a male-dominated narrative, and the future of equal representation in film demands that the industry finally comprehends that movies led by women can and do make money. Without question, the fact that Rey is female is important she's possibly 2015's most visible exception to film's male-dominated lead character field (in 2014, women made up only 7 percent of directors on the top 250 films, according to the Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film). Rey and her ilk are still the exception to the rule in popular film, and it's absolutely worth discussing what makes this heroine so inspiring - which, despite what many might think, is not simply her gender. ![]() While I hope the day will come when the existence of a character like Rey in a record-breaking blockbuster will be so commonplace that it won't be greeted by such strong reactions, the response is understandable. In the wake of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, there've been countless articles, blog posts, and discussions about Rey, played by Daisy Ridley. ![]() ![]() ![]() The Trade Desk stores the data anonymously. ![]() ![]() Opponents also have cited in their testimonies that there is little demand for rabbit meat. You do not need to be USDA inspected but do need to be inspected, by your state.” “The rationale behind the exemptions is that they don’t want to put all these little guys out of business. The USDA just doesn’t have the manpower to go out to a place doing 200 chickens,” Hermonot said. “The big guys are huge - Tyson, Purdue, Butterball - producing millions of birds. Hermonot said the USDA exemptions exist for efficiency reasons. We process our turkeys in our facility and sell them from our store right from the farm.” It really helped out our business tremendously. Before it was enacted, Ekonk Hill did only custom processing.Įkonk Hill owner Rick Hermonot said, “It was a big deal. ![]() They could raise and process animals continually, not just when one customer at a time said ‘that’s the one I want,’” Hurlburt said.Įkonk Hill Turkey Farm in Sterling was one of the facilities that benefited from that legal change affecting poultry. It made a big difference to the industry. “This is something the legislature did a decade or so ago for Connecticut-grown poultry, chickens and turkeys. Each farm would be subject to inspection not by the USDA but by state agricultural authorities. The bills, if passed, would let farmers process no more than 1,000 rabbits a year on their own farms, not just on demand but pre-sale, saving them facility money and letting them scale up their production. “We had more demand than we could meet, but it’s such an inefficient system,” he said. They could have sold more with a more streamlined process. Weinstock estimated that in any given year when they were custom-selling rabbits, they would sell from 100 to a few hundred a year. If you’re doing it in massive batches, it makes sense, but we are a small farm.” We were already selling at $10 a pound,” Larese said. By the time you add in these inspection fees out of pocket, that adds $20 a pound just for slaughter and inspection. “If you can find a USDA poultry plant that will do it, you have to pay to get the animals under inspection. Larese and Weinstock are familiar with this dilemma. Farmers can’t get the product to market in a way that can be supported,” he said. If you don’t have a lot of animals, it’s cost-prohibitive. “A USDA-certified processing center costs hundreds of dollars an hour. Hurlburt said both methods are problematic. ![]() ![]() Part of the issue is that getting on the river, and home again, is hardly straightforward, even if the actual drift is easy. “Tourism broadly, as well as the floaters that come, are absolutely tantamount to the success of my business, and, I think, the success of the other businesses in the area,” says Michael Volpatt, owner of downtown Guerneville’s beloved Big Bottom Market.īut float dollars have, in recent years, come with their own costs: crowds, trash, traffic snarls and parking congestion. The spike in visitors has presented opportunities and challenges for locals, particularly in Guerneville, a 9.8-square-mile resort town favorited by LGBTQ travelers since the 1970s, and now draws thousands of sun-seeking floaters. So it’s definitely a party scene,” says Heemstra, chuckling. “I’ve seen people have a whole keg in a tube going down the river. It can be just crazy,” says Scott Heemstra, store manager at King’s Sport and Tackle in Guerneville, which offers kayak rentals in addition to tubing supplies. “It’s like being on Spring Break for three months. Rodarmel is hardly alone in her love for floating the river, which meanders south through Sonoma County’s verdant landscape and then westward through Forestville and Guerneville to the Pacific. (Before visiting Sonoma County parks, check the county's Covid-19 status website and visitor FAQs.) Last week, as Sonoma County moved forward with reopening from shelter-in-place, the county announced it is allowing access to the river - music to the ears of many local residents looking for outdoor areas to visit as the weather warms up. “This is making me really excited for summer.” The ritual never gets old, Rodarmel says. Four or five hours later, they emerge, sun-saturated and hungry. (She won’t disclose its exact location for fear of drawing crowds.) Equipped with sunscreen, six-pack and floatable, she meets friends and together they shove off into the water. Rodarmel has spent the last 10 years tubing the same lazy 2.5-mile stretch of water in rural Sonoma County, near Cloverdale. ![]() ![]() ![]() Either way, here are our favorite funny scary movies for watching this Halloween.
